OpenBeta - Common Issues and Possible Fixes

My oh my what a colorful beta start we've had, poor Aionsource is taking a beating and we're not alone in that regard.

But that's neither here nor there, open-beta has some kinks and we have some workarounds although admittedly they're all not the most... ideal of ways.

Connectivity Errors

Unable to connect to authorization server.

Well shock horror the name kinda explains the issue, some users (myself included) were/are experiencing an issue that disallows connection to the login server. Please be sure to check with friends or other board users that the login server is actually up prior to scrambling around debugging it eh!

Since you've gotten this far chances are it's not your firewall or that would have killed you at GameGuard although you can try disabling that just to be sure. Assuming it is up you may have been given a dud IP, not overly sure why the launcher is distributing them but some of us have been getting IPs with which to connect to the server that simply do not work.

To override this go to your NCSoft launcher, right click Aion and go properties. You will see a "Extra Command Line Parameters" field which is what we're interested in.

North American Settings:
-ip:206.127.153.247 -port:2106

European Settings:
-ip:206.127.147.28 -port:2106

If need be you can add a -cc 1 or -cc 2 to the end of these however I have yet to see that make any difference. The cc field should be a constant in all clients, it's the IPs that are ranging.

I have 316,156,792 ping!

Hoho there's another little fun little thing I've had too, it would seem that NCSoft's server move to the east coast for OB has lead to some slight... hiccups regarding routing.

Users from all over the globe have been experiencing extreme ping and while high ping is standard for a lot of US users (100-500) as that's the nature of betas and launch days there are others of us reaching crazy levels (4,000-4,000,000+)

NCSoft has posted a fix for some latency issues which can be applied by repairing your client although this hasn't, as far as I've seen, resolved the routing issues to their datacenter that some of us are enjoying.

We have confirmed the more extreme pings as a routing issue on NCSoft's side rather than a user problem, realistically if the repair patch doesn't fix it for those of you experiencing extreme the only available alternative is tunneling. This has been confirmed to reduce ping back to acceptable norms by removing this annoying routing issue however due to the shady nature of tunneling no links will be referenced in this post.

Use at your own risk, I personally intend to format after OB to remove all traces of tunneling software from my system. Password changes are also encouraged after logging off for those of you that choose this path, not such a serious issue in OB but do be careful with release, I also strongly discourage anyone from having their master account pass and Aion pass as the same thing.

GameGuard Errors:

Error 114

Error 114 suggests that something is denying GameGuard access to boot, most typically incurred by users of Vista/Win7. Make sure you are running the NCLauncher/Aion as an Administrator which will resolve this 90% of the time. Anti-virus software may also cause this by detecting GameGuard's rootkit and preventing the program from doing diddly squat. Adding an exception for GameGuard (also known as gamemon) and Aion.bin should resolve the issue if it's your antivirus, disabling your AV will produce the same result but do so with caution.

Error 340

Error 340 would imply that GameGuard has failed to download, this is typically caused by firewalls/antiviruses preventing the program from connecting to the host server. Disabling your firewalls/antivirus or preferably just adding an exception should resolve the issue. For Vista/Win7 users running as Administrator is also suggested as per usual xD

Error 360/361

While this was a common error NCSoft have updated their gameguard server, it should no longer be a factor.

If you do receive the error I would advise going to your Aion installation directory, enter the bin32 subfolder and delete the folder called "GameGuard" Be sure that your client isn't attempting to run when you delete it. GameGuard should patch itself back up with next client launch and resolve the issue.

The Game or Game Guard was modified

We're starting to see this one more often these days so hopefully we can work around it. First off try going to your Aion installation directory, bin32 and delete the contained "GameGuard" folder.

This will cause GG to redownload and resolve any abnormalities within itself. If the error persists you can try running a client repair (seen here)

Now if the error still persists a complete re-installation is recommended, here's hoping you saved your install files. This error can also sometimes be bypassed by replacing your GameGuard.des with that from another game however I will not provide instructions or links regarding this. As far as I am aware NCSoft will not be forbidding users from using this last fix nor shall we here at AionSource however due to the possibility of malicious downloads I refuse to reference to any specific files. Use this last fix as a last resort and bear the risks in-mind.

GameGuard is not available in your country.

A common error prior to OB's launch this error will only appear if NCSoft takes down their GameGuard server, whether it crashes or they're just updating it doesn't really make a difference. There is no need for the user to do anything besides wait, NCSoft are usually fairly quick with these downtimes. On the positive side it means they're fixing something to do with GG errors!

Miscellaneous:

Wahh my client keeps closing!

Yeah we know, the client decides that closing is a good idea every single time an error is encountered while trying to connect to the game. It's something the western audience has hardly received with grace and NCWest are well aware of it. Whether or not it will be removed in the future... who knows, but yes we're well aware the system is frustrating so please stop making threads complaining about it!

The server lists have changed again, WTH!?

Hahah so you guys noticed too eh? Yeah we all got blindsided pretty badly with that one, my sympathies to the European guilds that got thrown into disarray.

Regarding launch we don't intend to get surprised like that again and I can guarantee NCWest has no intention of frustrating people especially at release! We'll be doing some digging as release approaches although chances are nothing's confirmed internally yet as far as servers go.

Bearing in mind that open-beta will be used to collect data to be compared against the marketing team's as far as servers needed, etc etc. Chances are the server lists are nowhere near confirmed internally yet xD!

Rubber-banding, disconnections, giant unicorns with chainsaws.

Bar the unicorns most sane people have noticed periods of rubber-banding and random d/cs, there have been some tweaks applied to the server throughout the day although hopefully more will be done prior to release.

Cannot register on the betaboards

Seems all the downtime across the Internet has caused some bugs with the Aion BetaBoards portal, as far as I'm aware NCSoft is still working on the issue. I've paged Liv to go remove Ayase's face from the server's keyboard where he's been passed out since OB but alas she's busy ganking you newbies in the Abyss atm!

It seems Aion has quite a large following with the entire Internet (well the parts related to Aion) more or less grinding to a halt today, every time a new error showed up as NCSoft were trying to launch the beta users would flock in the thousands to various fansites and gaming portals.

Of course such huge numbers tend to anger the Internet gods causing fansites across the Internet to go smashing down in flames, and guess what happens when one site goes down? EVERYONE migrates the the next one and... well bad things happen. Aionsource hit over eleven thousand concurrent(active) users before our database hamster suffered a heart-attack, we are looking into various pacemakers to ensure he doesn't die with the next big rush.

Apparently our lords and masters at NCSoft are not even immortal to such forces with AionOnline exploding several times throughout the launch (Whose bright idea was it to have the game client redirect to AionOnline when it closes anyway? Thousands of beta users getting kicked out of their clients with every failed login and sent to AionOnline... someone didn't think that one through!) PlayNC also died and then by pure happenstance went into "scheduled maintenance"... I'm totally buying that story xD

And that about wraps things up for this beta weekend and the issues surrounding it, if I've missed any common issues to which we have fixes feel free to post letting me know.

Any non-constructive replies (ZOMG NCSOFT, I'M GONNA RUN AWAY AND NEVER COME BACK!!!!) will be deleted without warning and users will be reprimanded accordingly. I know better than most of you how frustrating this beta can get but that doesn't mean we all have to lower ourselves into hate wars against each other or NCSoft.

Corrections to posted content are also quite welcome, I haven't slept in over two days so that probably explains the chainsaw unicorns... =/

Edit: To fix my lag issues, i directly connected my computer to my modem. It seems to have done the trick... hopefully i'ts not a placebo effect, haha.

A redundant comment considering tunneling services (eg lowerping) were actually referenced as one of the two solutions to the issue o.o

I've been experiencing a different problem (just in this Ob , during the previous CB was all fine).
Randomly the game will switch to my desktop and popup an error saying "GameGuard will be closed", if I click Ok, the game will close, otherwise I can continue. Switching back to the game, it will say that maybe some illegal software has been running and the game will close, and then it prompts the quitting procedure, which I can cancel. Keeping in background the GG error window and cancelling the quitting thing I can keep playing but I don't think this is so normal.

As said, I am experiencing this only in this beta. I have installed pretty much nothing since the last beta, I've scanned my desktop with both antivirus and antimalware but nothing. Tried also to delete and repatch the Gameguard folder.

Any suggestions?

What about 'You are disconnected from the game server'. There some posts on the forums about it but all everyone says is 'its happening to me too! halp!'.

I haven't been able to log in, in 2 days. Kind of silly. Hopefully its fixed soon : /

Another solution for authentication errors is to switch your region to EU, but don't restart the launcher. Then switch it back to NA and do restart the launcher, it may work then. This has worked for all 3 people that I know have tried it.

The switching idea you refer to has a chance to automatically trigger an ip change to the login servers, it's the same method as the manual adjustment mentioned in the post above just a bit simpler and a bit more luck-oriented ^^
